Towards Informative Statistical Flow Inversion

چکیده
A problem which has recently attracted research attention is that of estimating the distribution of flow sizes in internet traffic. On high traffic links it is sometimes impossible to record every packet. Researchers have approached the problem of estimating flow lengths from sampled packet data in two separate ways. Firstly, different sampling methodologies can be tried to more accurately measure the desired system parameters. One such method is the sample-and-hold method where, if a packet is sampled, all subsequent packets in that flow are sampled. Secondly, statistical methods can be used to “invert” the sampled data and produce an estimate of flow lengths from a sample. In this paper we propose, implement and test two variants on the sample-and-hold method. In addition we show how the sample-and-hold method can be inverted to get an estimation of the genuine distribution of flow sizes. Experiments are carried out on real network traces to compare standard packet sampling with three variants of sample-andhold. The methods are compared for their ability to reconstruct the genuine distribution of flow sizes in the traffic.

A Direct Matrix Inversion-Less Analysis for Distribution System Power Flow Considering Distributed Generation
This paper presents a new direct matrix inversion-less analysis for radial distribution systems (RDSs). The method can successfully deal with weakly meshed distribution systems. (WMDSs). Being easy to implement, direct methods (DMs) provide an excellent performance. Matrix inversion is the mean reason of divergence and low-efficiency in power flow algorithms. In this paper, the performance of t...
متن کاملRock physics based facies classification from seismic-inversion results in unconventional reservoirs
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the power of integrating rock physics theory, measurement and simulation to improve facies prediction in an unconventional limestone and shale reservoir. Reliable facies prediction is a challenge in unconventional reservoir characterization because of complex geological heterogeneities. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are commonly us...
متن کاملPhenomenological description of phase inversion.
We propose an extended Ginzburg-Landau model for a description of the ambivalence region associated with the phenomenon of phase inversion observed in dispersed water-oil flow through a pipe. In analogy to the classical mean-field theory of phase transitions, it is shown that a good quantitative representation of the ambivalence region is obtained by using the injected phase volume fraction and...
متن کاملStatistical Inverse Formulation of Optical Flow with Uncertainty Quantification
Optical flow refers to the visual motion observed between two consecutive images. Since the degree of freedom is typically much larger than the constraints imposed by the image observations, the straightforward formulation of optical flow inference is an ill-posed problem. By setting some type of additional “regularity” constraints, classical approaches formulate a well-posed optical flow infer...
متن کاملA new method for 3-D magnetic data inversion with physical bound
Inversion of magnetic data is an important step towards interpretation of the practical data. Smooth inversion is a common technique for the inversion of data. Physical bound constraint can improve the solution to the magnetic inverse problem. However, how to introduce the bound constraint into the inversion procedure is important. Imposing bound constraint makes the magnetic data inversion a n...
